Friend, please read the following Scripture and share your thoughts below:
8 "Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while
9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.
10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
12 So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged. 2 Corinthians 7:8-13
Question 1
From verse 11, write out the seven ways that godly sorrow showed itself in the life of the Corinthians.
Question 2
Count the number of times in this passage Paul uses the words "sorry," "sorrow" or "sorrowful."
Question 3
According to verses 9 and 10, what does godly sorrow over sin bring about?
Note this well: True sorrow over sin brings about real repentance. This being true, we need to pray for sorrow in our hearts, that it might lead us to repentance.
After exposing my sins to my pastor for the first time, while I was driving away from his office, I began weeping and sobbing uncontrollably.
My heart was breaking at the shame I had cast on the name of Christ (I was a professing Christian during those years of sin).
It was also painful to see what I had made of my life, and to think of all the pain I had caused others. My sorrow was so great that I pulled the car over and parked so I could sit and weep over my sin.
This sorrow birthed within me a resolve to never return to pornography, Internet sex chatting, or illicit sexual relationships again—and to this day, I have not.
Godly sorrow brings about repentance, and so this sorrow is our friend. Seek after it, and pray to God for it.
Question 4
According to the above passage, what does worldly sorrow bring about?
Question 5
Godly sorrow is the mourning one goes through when he has grieved the Holy Spirit of God with sin. When you are only sorry about your sin because you got caught or because of its consequences, what kind of sorrow would you call that?
Question 6
According to verse 10, what is the ultimate end of only having worldly sorrow?
It should be clear now that godly sorrow leads to and is a part of repentance that in turn leads to life, whereas worldly sorrow leads to death.
Question 7
Honestly examine your heart right now and pray to the Holy Spirit for clarity. Have you been granted godly sorrow and genuine repentance unto life, or do you only have worldly sorrow? Share your thoughts:
Thus far, we have seen that part of repentance is experiencing a godly sorrow over sins committed against God.
How do the following verses define repentance?

Question 8
14 And it will be said:
"Build up, build up, prepare the road!
Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people." 15 For this is what the high and lofty One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
"I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite." Isaiah 57:14-15
也与心灵痛悔、谦卑的人同居;
Friend, the habitual viewing of pornography and ongoing sexual impurity hardened my heart and puffed me up with pride. Sin, pride and hardness of heart always go together (Hebrews 3:13).
Genuine repentance brings with it lowliness and contriteness. When I first came out of pornography, although I had some biblical knowledge, I kept quiet and asked for help from others who were free.
I asked questions, asked for input, and asked for accountability. I realized that all my head knowledge had not benefited me. Information is not the same thing as transformation.
We can recognize this humility in people as they begin to ask questions and request help, instead of presenting all their biblical knowledge and opinions on everything. They become humble and teachable, lowly and contrite.
This repentance is the key to lasting victory over sin. Anything short of true repentance will leave one open to return to the sin.
Only God can grant repentance, so, ask Him for the gift of repentance—and then repent with horror and disgust at past sins.
Course member Joe wrote, "My sorrow was in that I was offending God and was not getting close to Him at all. When I confessed in this area, I fell to my knees with a broken heart, wanting to be delivered and desiring a closer relationship with God.
Repentance is a by-product of God's grace. He is the one who breaks hearts. I believe a broken heart before God over any sin is equivalent to repentance."
Repentance means turning completely away from sin, doing an about-face, and then pursuing God with reckless abandon. It also means sorrowing over sin to such an extent that the heart grows to hate the sin and turns from it in disgust.
If either element is missing, the "freedom" from sin will not be lasting.
If one merely feels sorrow over the sin but does not turn from it, he is not free. Likewise, if one merely turns from the sin but does not experience a deep sorrow over it, he is not free. Freedom requires both sorrow over sin and turning away from it.
Question 9
Are both of these qualities of repentance becoming evident in your life? Are you turning away from sin toward God, and are you sorrowing in your heart over sin?
Next, notice how repentance works itself out in worship. These next few verses show what true worship looks like, and admonishes us to conform:
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen, rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven, and you are on earth, so let your words be few. Much dreaming, and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God! Ecclesiastes 5:1-2,7
This passage shows that worship of God from a repentant soul brings quietness and awe of God.
My years in sexual sin were loud years, with much talking and teaching and making myself out to be somebody I wasn't. All my many words were evidence that I was not in awe of God and was instead taken with myself.
But when God brought me low and caused my heart to fear Him, I immediately shut up—and was in awe of God.
He was in heaven and I was on earth. I began seeing Him for Who He is, and myself for the loud-mouthed, irreverent man that I was.
This Scripture isn't saying that when we're in awe of God, we cannot talk. Some people are naturally more talkative than others, and do not necessarily sin by talking.
These verses refer to the loud and obnoxious man who feels that what he has to say is incredibly important, and who does not revere the Lord.
So, true repentance evidences itself in the worship of God. It shows us the majestic deity of God—His holiness, power, grace, and love. When we develop awe for Him, we listen more than we talk.
Question 10
Is your life "loud" or "quiet"? Are you discovering awe of God and becoming quiet before Him?
Notice the definition of repentance in this verse:
Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices. Ezekiel 14:6
This applies to those of us who have been involved with sexual sin.
Pornography is an "idol," and we are to turn away from it. Self-gratification is a "detestable practice," and we are to renounce it.
Question 11
Finally, please tell us how you are doing now. What are your struggles and victories? It helps your mentor to know how to pray for you.
If you could use a word of hope, please read the following Bible passages:
If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. Jeremiah 18:7-8
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:7
46When they sin against you - for there is no one who does not sin - and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to his own land, far away or near;
47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their conquerors and say, 'We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly';
48 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray to you toward the land you gave their fathers, toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name;
49then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.
50 And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their conquerors to show them mercy;
51 for they are your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace" 1 Kings 8:46-51

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible;
it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.
It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
