Welcome back! So far, we have discussed the necessity of drinking living water from Jesus in order to quench our thirst.
We've seen that God is a "Spring of living water," and that turning to anything other than God for satisfaction is like spending our lives on something that will not satisfy.
We have also seen that pornography, adultery, and sexual impurity are "broken cisterns" that will not hold water, and will not quench our thirst (Jeremiah 2:13). Today we'll discuss another principle that, if understood and acted upon, will set us free from sexual impurity.
Have you ever noticed that most fungi grow best in the dark? If you were to turn light on the fungus, it would be sapped of strength, wither, and eventually die. Sexual impurity is the same: it too thrives in the darkness. Typically, pornography is consumed in secret, and as long as the sin remains in the dark, it will no doubt continue.
During my years of slavery to pornography, I appeared to be a respectable man. I was an airline captain, had been to seminary, taught Sunday School at our church, was outwardly successful, and had a good family. But in secret, I was a completely different man. As a pilot,
I would layover in hotels and had a great deal of private time. The pornographic channels in hotel rooms pulled me in repeatedly, year after year after year. I would pray against it, read my Bible, and plan not to fall... but as soon as I'd get to the privacy of my hotel room, lust would take over and I would plunge into pornography.
I was living two different lives. Those living in deceit like this will do everything they can to protect their sinful secret life from being exposed. They become angry and defensive if questioned about any wrongdoing.
I remember once preaching very passionately about the evils of pornography and sexual sins; it really was a great sermon! The only problem was, I had just stayed up most of the previous night indulging in pornography. What horrible hypocrisy!
I know firsthand that people involved with pornography have a hidden secret life, and that they'll do all in their power to keep it from being exposed. And yet, this exposure is the very thing necessary to eradicate it.
What was happening to me during those years, that I had no power to overcome sin? Why did I give in time and time again, especially when I had prayed so much about it?
The answer is that this sinning was all done in the darkness, in secret, where sin thrives. My secret life illustrated the truth of John 3:19-20:
"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed."
Question 1
问题1
Can you relate to this? Do you give in to sexual sin "in the darkness"?
Here is what eventually happened in my case: I met a woman on the Internet six months after my first wife left me, and we began corresponding.
My sins were still in secret and I convinced this woman, who was a Christian, that I was a fine, upstanding Christian man, quoting many Bible verses to prove my point. We were married in February of 1998, nearly a year and a half after we first met.
But I continued with pornography, self-gratification, and sex chatting on the Internet, and my wife soon discovered my sin. She was extremely afraid for our marriage, so she sought help from a counselor. We were directed to a pastor in Ohio, where we began weekly counseling.
One day during counseling, the subject of pornography came up. I found myself confessing my years of pornography use to my pastor. I asked for his help in stopping my habitual sinning. Friend, this was extremely difficult to do! As you can imagine, it was embarrassing and demeaning to my wife and to me.
Finally admitting that I was not, on the inside, who I claimed to be on the outside—the experience truly broke me. But humbling myself in front of my pastor was the start of my escape from darkness.
You might not feel able to confess to your spouse or your pastor right now, Friend. And this is only the third day in The Way of Purity course, so you no doubt still have "shaky knees" in your newfound walk of freedom.
But you have already begun to drag this sin into the light. You came here and enrolled in this course, solicited help from us and, in the box above, you described your own secret sins. You are making progress, by God’s grace!
Please read the following passage:
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives." 1 John 1:5-10
Verse 6 above shows that, while I was involved in pornography, I was deceived. I was claiming to have fellowship with God, yet was walking in the darkness.
In reality, my life was a lie and I was not living by the truth. I'm not saying that I wasn't a Christian while involved in pornography, but that I was not walking in truth.
This is a sad scenario that we at Setting Captives Free see quite often. People come here who are hiding a vast part of their lives from their loved ones, co-workers and friends.
They may appear to be spiritual people who are knowledgeable about the Bible. What these people need to do is to begin to slowly, carefully, expose this hidden life to someone else, using discernment as to whom to approach and when to do so.
Question 2
问题2
Can you relate to this level of deception and secrecy? Have you been living in secrecy?
Question 3
问题3
According to verse 7 above, there are two results of walking in the light. Please list them here:
Did you catch that? If we begin walking in the light, not only are we able to fellowship with others who are walking in the light, but Jesus Himself purifies our lives! Purity is the result of coming into the light, and you have already begun!
Course member Ted writes, "Pornography and self-gratification are very private activities. Part of the reason we want to be rid of this sin is because of the shame and self-loathing that it creates in our hearts.
I thought exposing this sin to another would cause me to feel the shame and loathing more intensely. The opposite was true. What came to me after exposing it was the pure freedom of not having to live the lie. It was not what I expected, but it was a most wonderful gift God gave me."

Question 5
We are to first and foremost confess our sins to God. Here is a safe environment for you to write out a prayer of confession to Him. This confession is only seen by God and us, but it's the first step toward walking in the light that brings purity.
Feel free to drag your sin into the light right here, and write a prayer of confession to God:
Question 6
Can you see how putting this Scripture into practice will result in purity? How will you begin walking in the light? Keep in mind that you do not have to do each one of these right now, today, but write out a list of different things that you eventually want to do:
For now, Friend, just ask God to show you ways to begin coming into the light. Yes, it is scary to confess, and yes, it can be humbling to ask for help. But ongoing victory and purity is worth it.
I would not trade these past years of purity for the 15 in which I was walking in darkness for anything. Things are too good now!
You may also be concerned about the effect of your confession upon those you love, especially if they are unbelievers. To read a very helpful devotional on this subject (Oswald Chambers' "What My Obedience to God Costs Other People"), click here.

Question 7
"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible." Ephesians 5:8-14
Question 8
Finally, please share with us what you have learned today, and how you will apply it. Your mentor will happily provide input based on what you write here and assist you in coming into the light slowly, with wisdom and discernment.
Some people, in their zeal to confess all, have blurted out their sins to their spouse (or others) in a way that increases the hurt and pain the spouse feels.
Please use wisdom and discernment as to the timing and details of the confession. It is not advisable to give details regarding your sin. You may want to ask your mentor for help in planning your confession.
Thoughts to consider:
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:9
will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm my great army that I sent among you Joel 2:25
Further thoughts about confession: when considering confessing sin to your spouse, please consider the following five points:
Get a second and third opinion about whether confession is necessary and, if so, what should be shared. Obviously, physical adultery should be confessed, as does habitual sin. But beyond that, there is room for discussion, and it is best to get input from others in the body of Christ.
If confession needs to happen, request assistance from the body of Christ. Ask a pastor, elder, or small group leader to be with you during the confession to help ensure a godly response on all sides.
Use biblical terms, and ask for forgiveness. Don’t minimize the sin; call it what the Bible calls it and then ask forgiveness. If you need to confess physical adultery, say, "I confess that I have committed adultery, and I am very sorry. Will you please forgive me?" Do not say, "I had a small affair..."
Present the details of your plan for leaving sin behind—such as how you have radically amputated the source of the sin, that you are taking the Setting Captives Free 60-day course, to whom you are now being accountable, that you are checking in with the pastor or elders once a week, etc.
In other words, don't merely confess sin, but share your plan to be free from it, and what you are doing right now.
Never share details. The confession should be straightforward and honest, without minimizing whatsoever, and yet not include any of the details of the sin. The sharing of details may plant thoughts in the minds of others which make it difficult to forgive. Be firm—no sharing of details.
To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?
"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.
It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth. This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
