Thanks for continuing with The Way of Purity course! Today we'll consider:
1.Our Glorious Inheritance as God's children
2.Our Identity in Christ
One of Satan's lies is that faith in Christ really has no effect on our lives—that we haven't changed and remain the same old sinner we always were.
But God's Word tells us the truth about what really happens to people when they become His children and escape the bondage they were in through Adam’s sin.
We need to understand our identity in Christ because knowing who we are affects the way we respond to events in our lives. When you are trying to overcome the sin of lust.
for example, you need to know that you are not a lustful person in God's eyes but that you have a new identity. If you believed that you were still lustful, and that you couldn't help yourself, you would very easily succumb to every temptation that comes your way.
Knowing who we are in Christ helps us to be victorious over pornography and sexual sin. We aren't the same people we were when we were "dead in sins and trespasses" (Eph. 2:1)—we're now "new creations in Christ" with new hearts, desires, and motives.
Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" If we have repented of our sins and received Christ as Lord and Savior, we are "in Christ."
What exactly does it mean to be "in Christ"? My Bible happens to have study notes in it, and here's what it states about being "in Christ."
"United with Christ through faith in Him and commitment to Him."
As believers, we have a spiritual union with Jesus (and thus with God Himself). The bond we have with the Lord is unseen, but is nonetheless very real.
Jesus explains this in His prayer in the book of John:
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:20-21
Our relationship with God is one of living in Him, and He living in us. He gives His life to us, and we give ours to Him. He gives His love to us; we give ours to Him.
To enjoy our relationship with God to the fullest, we need to understand how He has changed our lives, and then we need to experience that change practically.
Let’s consider what God says about those who are "in Christ." All of the study questions today are taken from Ephesians 2:1-10, which contrasts who we were with who we are.
1.As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins... Eph. 2:1-10
Question 1
问题1
According to verse 1, what were we?
Paul is referring here to spiritual death. This "deadness" showed up in many ways in our lives—such as our bondage to habitual sins.
To overcome this bondage, we did not need education, behavior modification, or mere admonition to stop doing what we were doing. Instead, we needed life! We were born dead to God, His Word, and the church.
2.in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
Question 2
Who does verse 2 tell us we were?
We were not only dead, we were following along after every temptation that came our way.
Question 3
问题3
What else does verse 2 tell us we were?
3.All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
Question 4
问题4
What does verse 3 tell us we were?
Question 5
问题5
What else does verse 3 tell us we were?
Not only were we dead, devilish, and disobedient, but we were also depraved! This is the condition of all who follow their impulses and live to gratify their flesh. Over time, we began to be controlled by our impulses, which grew stronger and stronger.
Question 6
问题6
What does verse 3 tell us is the final description of who we used to be?
That's right, we were the destination of God's wrath! We were the bull's-eye for the arrows of God's hatred and anger. This ought to frighten us to the core of our very being—and if we've escaped the trap of sexual impurity, we ought to be grateful for the grace of God!
Question 7
Friend, please describe how your past life in pornography and immorality illustrates the above teaching. How were you dead, devilish, disobedient, and depraved?
Important note: we readily admit that a Christian who is alive in Christ may succumb to the temptation of pornography, adultery, or other sins.
But while the believer may be disobedient at times, he is not dead, devilish, depraved, or under the wrath of God.
The passage we have just studied is about unbelievers who live in sin. As Ephesians 2 states: "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live."
Next, we'll see the great transformation that's taken place in those who receive Christ. We are not who we were! Our identity is different. Read the following passage, which tells us who we are now:
4.But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
Question 8
问题8
According to verse 4, what are we?

It is God's love and grace that changes our identity.
Question 9

5.made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved.
Question 10
问题10
What does verse 5 tell us we are?
Question 11
问题11
What else does verse 5 tell us we are?
Salvation is by grace alone. Not grace and what we do; it is all of grace. God chose us to be saved (Ephesians 1, 2 Thess. 2:13), gave us grace to believe (Acts 18:27), and keeps us saved throughout eternity (Jude).
6.And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
Question 12

This is why man's methods of helping those with addictions will not work. Man can give advice, suggestions, and counsel, but man cannot impart life! Only God can raise the dead.
7.in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

According to verse 7, who are we?
8.For it is by grace you have been saved through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.
Question 14
问题14
According to verses 8 and 9, what are we?
10.For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Question 15
问题15
What does verse 10 tell us we are?
The Greek word for "workmanship" is the poema, from which we get our word "poem." We are God's poem to the world, the art that displays His grace, His workmanship of love.

Friend, isn't it awesome to consider all that God has done for us? Take time right now to praise God in prayer for all the wonderful things He's done in your life. We are not the same anymore!
My challenge to you is to read through the entire book of Ephesians and do this same kind of verse-by-verse study. There are even more wonderful truths you will discover about who you are now in Christ Jesus!
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:18
Question 16
问题16
What are some practical differences in your life, now that you have left pornography and sexual impurity behind? Can you see a difference? Does anyone else see the change?
Thoughts to consider:
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal. 2:20
Note: we mentioned above that those who are Christians are no longer the target of God's wrath. There are two situations, however, which might lead Christians who struggled with impurity to wonder if they are still targets of God's wrath:
(1) If we continue to wallow in sin, we are creating doubt about our salvation (1 John 3:6-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11). So if my sinful habits are a sign that I was never truly saved, then perhaps I am still an object of God's wrath!
(2) Even if I am saved and no longer in danger of hell (that's the meaning of "object of God's wrath"), as a child of God, I am still setting myself up for God's chastening if I persist in sinning.
I can tell you, from personal experience, that sometimes God's chastening feels a lot like his wrath! To read an article by Mike Cleveland entitled "Sin and Salvation," click here.
To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.
It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
