Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me."
For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. James 1:12-16
Today, we will learn what can get us through every temptation and trial we face. Those who embrace and apply what we learn will find that God's Word is powerful enough to release us from slavery to sexual sin.
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32). The inevitable result of embracing Truth is pure freedom!
In James 1:12 above, a promise is made to the person who stands the test and "perseveres under trial." The motive for standing and persevering is the love of God—and "the crown of life" is promised as well.
Life will have its share of trials and temptations, but this passage reveals God's path of victory through them.
When I am faced with a severe trial or an intense temptation, I have a choice: either persevere in faith and stand up under the trial, or fall down in sin and deception.
The James passage above promises me the "crown of life" if I stand and persevere, and shows me that death will be the end result if I follow the path of temptation, desire, and sin. This is quite literally a life-or-death decision! The critical question is this: What is the motive for choosing to stand and persevere?
Question 1
Please write out James 1:12 here.
Question 2
What motive for persevering is listed here?
Some may answer "the crown of life" to the question of motive. However, when we look a little deeper, we see that the real motive for persevering through the trial and standing up under temptation is the love of God. God promises the crown of life "to those who love Him."
Friend, any human attempt to bring freedom to those trapped in sin is doomed to fail because it lacks this motive. There is no true freedom in the heart that does not love God.
But once this love for God is planted in the heart, it enables us to go through any trial and any temptation without falling. If we are falling to sin, we do not have proper love for God.
Paul's prayer for the Thessalonians reinforces this: "May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance" (2 Thessalonians 3:5).
This leads to an obvious question: "How, then, do I acquire love for God?" There's no simple answer, but here are a few thoughts and some practical suggestions taken from my own experience in growing in love for God:
1.First, ask God to give you a heart that loves Him. "You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it" (John 14:14). "You do not have, because you do not ask God"(James 4:2b).
If this concept is new to you, you may want to pause here and acknowledge to the Lord that your love for Him needs to be increased, and ask Him to do it.
2.Dwell on the cross of Jesus Christ. "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us" (1 John 3:16a).
In all of human history, there has never been an act of love displayed to the world that demonstrates the love of God better than the cross of Christ.
Meditate on this cross, asking God to give you love for the One who died in our place. Think often of the wounds he suffered to pardon us from sin's penalty and free us from sin's power:
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. — Isaiah 53:5-6
因他受的刑罚,我们得平安;
Obey God's Word. "But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him" (1 John 2:5).
We require grace of God before we can obey the Word of God. Do you want your heart flooded with the love of God? Walk in obedience, and you will have it.
4."Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life" (Jude 21).
Friend, God alone is able to keep us from falling (Jude 24), but we are exhorted to keep ourselves in the love of God.
This mirrors John 15, where we are told to "abide in the Vine," and 1 John, where we are told to "remain in Him" (1 John 2:27). We must do all we can to remain in God's love.
Question 3
问题3
Please write out the above four principles for walking in God's love, and indicate whether you are currently applying them.
Next, let's look at James 1:12-16 again:
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. James 1:12-16
Verses 13-16 describe the nature of temptation with two analogies:
1.Fishing. "But each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed." The phrase "dragged away and enticed" calls to mind bait—what a fisherman uses to lure the fish. When we are being enticed to sin, we focus on the bait, rather than the hook.
In the Garden of Eden, Eve saw that the fruit was "pleasing to the eye," but she did not focus on the death that would result from her eating it. For years, I was enamored with the "perfect" images of pornography, never looking at the death of my marriage that would follow.
Question 4
问题4
What is the bait to which you have been attracted in the past?
Question 5
问题5
In what ways has the bait hooked you?
Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:15
2.Delivery. "Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." when we are enticed to sin, all we see is the conception, rather than the birth. Temptation not only obscures the "hook" but also the "birth of death."
Scripture teaches us to have a different perspective—to view the ultimate consequences of our actions, from the initial bait to the death that eventually results. The wages of sin is death — Romans 6:23.
Question 6
问题6
How has giving in to evil desires given birth to death in your life? Some may describe how evil desires have taken them to such lengths that they have acquired a sexually transmitted disease or even AIDS, and now they are awaiting their own physical death.
For others, it might be the death of a marriage. Have you experienced a death from sin yet? If not, do you see how you were headed in that direction?
Friend, these verses end with a surprising remedy for the problem of temptation and sin: "Don't be deceived, my dear brothers" (James 1:16).
Sin is deception, by its very nature. In displaying the bait, the fisherman is not offering the fish something which is good for it. Instead, the fisherman intends to kill the fish. Evil desire and lust do not ultimately relieve tension, provide excitement, or spice up our lives; they bring death.
Do not be deceived! How do we overcome pornography and sexual sin? We see it for what it is. Pornography is the bait that is used to hook us and kill us, and the "excitement" of lust will bring about our death.
Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. James 1.15-16
To summarize today's teaching: it is the love of God that enables us to endure trials and to stand up under temptation.
It is the love of God that releases us from deception and frees us from sin's power. And it is the love of God that will bring us into glory as Christ’s spotless bride.
Question 7
What are your final thoughts on today's teaching? Did you learn anything new, or will you do anything different? How will you apply these Scriptures to the ongoing battle against sexual impurity?
Thoughts to consider:
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
"Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you." Eph. 5:11-14
22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness. Lam. 3:22-23

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?
"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.
It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
