Only Jesus Christ can give true and lasting victory.
Friend, there are many false saviors being offered today. If you search on the Internet for "help for addictions," you'll discover 12-step programs, psychological counseling programs, hypno-therapy, medication therapies, natural and alternative therapies, meditation, etc.
I declare to you, on the authority of God's Word, that only Jesus Christ is able to deliver us out of slavery to pornography and immorality:
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor. 10:3-5
We are continuing our study today in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. Please fill in the blanks below:
Question 1
问题1
"For though we live in the world, we do not _________ _________ as the world does."
因为我们虽然在血气中行事,却不_________ _________。
"The weapons we _________ _________ are not the weapons of the world."
我们____________的兵器,本不是属血气的。
"On the contrary, they have divine power to _________ _________."
乃是在神面前有能力,可以____________ ____________。
Why do the man-made programs mentioned above, not work? They do not work because only divine power and weapons are effective against the demonic strongholds that Satan has set up in our minds. And only Jesus Christ, as God, is divine.
Question 2
According to the above verses, what does it take to demolish thought-strongholds?
Friend, no 12-step plan, no un-biblical counseling, no group therapy, no program of man (including this one) is able deliver us from the clutches of pornography and sexual sin.
It takes divine power and divine weapons. We are completely dependent upon God.
Demolishing thought strongholds—by God's power!
Jesus Christ is God's "divine power" and "divine weapon." Without Him, we have no way to permanently win the battle against porn and sexual impurity. Let's learn how to put these in our lives—read the following verses and answer the questions below.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. 2 Corinthians 10:5
Question 3
According to the above verse, what are we to do when we are bombarded with a pornographic thought or image that may become a stronghold?
Question 4
If you have ever tried to "demolish" these thought strongholds on your own, you've learned that it is impossible to do.
It takes "divine power." Have you ever tried to just not dwell on pornographic images or lustful thoughts, using your own strength? What happened?
We are to demolish thought strongholds—to totally annihilate, exterminate, and eradicate sinful thoughts so that our enemy does not gain a stronghold in our lives.
Friends, if we begin to dwell on porn images, we are rolling out the red carpet for Satan. This is spiritual warfare.
In spiritual warfare, we must possess Jesus Christ and beg God for divine power in order to tear down the pornographic images. In spiritual warfare, we lose the battle when a thought is able to lodge in our minds; we only win the battle when we demolish the thought.
Please explain how each of the following verses teaches us dependence on God.
Question 5
问题5
But thanks be to God Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Corinthians 15:57
Course member John wrote, "The victory over pornography, like salvation, is a gift. We don't earn it; we don't work for it, but we give the battle to Christ. He is great warrior who destroys the strongholds in my life."
Course member Ann wrote, "This verse lets us know that we do not conquer the enemy on our own...
we don't earn our victories or fight alone. It is God who literally GIVES us the victory - and that is only available through the Lord Jesus Christ."
Question 6
问题6
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. — Romans 8:37
Course member Ann wrote, "I become a victorious person through Jesus. Rather than a habitual sinner I become a habitual victor."
Question 7
问题7
If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. — John 8:36
Course member John wrote, "I will no longer kneel at the altar of pornography, bound by chains of sin. He will break those chains, as only He can."
Course member Ann wrote, "If you pass a 12 step program, or make your way through a host of therapy sessions, there is always a chance that your victories will not last. You can go back to a life of bondage.
But when we experience true freedom from sin and habits and strongholds through the power of Christ, we do NOT go back to bondage.
He does not partially deliver us. He totally destroys the chains that bind us, he obliterates the prisons that we lived in, and He completely demolishes the strongholds.
I never have to go back to the life I once lived. I never have to be a slave to lustful thoughts or to self-gratification. I am no longer hopeless, helpless or powerless. I am completely free because of Christ."
Question 8
For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves... — Colossians 1:13
John wrote, "God has not only saved me, He has taken me to the stronghold of the Son. Here I am safe. Here there is rest and refreshment.
There is no relaxation, for I am to be about His work. But here, He keeps me. Pornography cannot venture into this place. It is thrown back by the glorious light of God Almighty Himself."
Ann wrote, "God did not offer me a quick-fix or a "band-aid" sort of solution for my lifestyle of addiction.
He rescued me. He came to me while I was saturated in my sin - suffocating and drowning... He came and got me - and brought me to a wide and open place of freedom!"
Question 9
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.
12 It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. — Titus 2:11,12
Ann wrote, "By God's grace, I find myself able to say "no" to the thoughts and temptations that come from the enemy. His grace alone enables me to resist and then compels me to offer a life of holiness back to the One who set me free!"
We must depend upon divine power in order to "take every thought captive." This is not easy to do. War is difficult.
And yet, with Jesus Christ, we will win. We are to make our thoughts prisoners of war—to notice when a particular thought is attempting to become a stronghold, and take it captive to Jesus.
This is what it might look like in everyday life: I'm cruising along in my day, doing just fine, when all of a sudden, wham! I'm hit with the mental image of an 8 X 12 glossy image of something I viewed a year ago.
Wow! It's appealing, too. And I start to look at it, and... then I stop and cry out to God: "Oh, God, please Lord Jesus, rescue me. The devil is attempting to erect a stronghold in my mind to cause me to sin.
Help! I know that your resurrection power is at work in me right now. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for dying for me, and for always living to intercede for me."
Friend, do you understand why you haven't found success over pornographic images and sexual impurity in the past?
You might be realizing for the first time that you do not have divine power, and simply aren't able to "demolish strongholds" on your own. Maybe you realize that you need Jesus Christ. Please call to Him right now, won't you?
John wrote, "Yes! I am seeing my need of Jesus Christ to be my "divine power," so that I can "demolish strongholds." Lord helping me, I am going to begin earnestly seeking the Lord."
"I also went to a 12-step program for sexual addiction. After a year, I quit. I found it very difficult to deal with a group of individuals who would admit their problems, but who wouldn't admit that God had the power to change them.
The only support was supposed to come from being able to unload within a safe group of people who had similar problems. They talked about a 'higher power', which could be anything, including a stuffed teddy bear. To this 'power' they gave the credit for their faithfulness,
but then would have to admit failure again and again. It seemed to me they really had no hope and couldn't offer any. I know this system has benefits and works for some people but I was frustrated because I felt God was missing from the formula."
from Stone Cold in a Warm Bed by Kathryn Wilson with Paul Wilson, page 35,36
In a scene in Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan described the battle that is fought with the enemy:
"Apollyon, seeing an opportunity, came up close to Christian, and wrestled with him, giving him a dreadful fall; and with that Christian's sword flew out of his hand. Then Apollyon said, "I have won now," and nearly killed Christian.
But, as God would have it, while Apollyon was about to strike the final blow, Christian nimbly reached out his hand for his sword, and grabbed a hold of it, saying, Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise" (Mic. 7:8);
and with that he thrust his sword into Apollyon, which made him fall back, as one that had received a deadly wound. Christian seeing the devil retreat, rushed at him again, saying, "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through Him Who loved us" (Rom. 8:37).
And with that Apollyon spread forth his dragon wings, and hurried away, and Christian saw him no more(James 4:7).
但是,仿佛是神巧动神功,就在亚玻伦打出致命的一拳时,基督徒敏捷地伸出抓起宝剑,喊道:‘我的仇敌啊,不要向我夸耀,我虽跌倒,却要起来!’(弥迦书7:8);

"He gives thanks for victory. Truly we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us; for we can give thanks before the fight is done. Yes, even in the thickest of the battle we can look up to Jesus, and cry, Thanks to God.
The moment a soul groaning under corruption rests the eye on Jesus, that moment his groans are changed into songs of praise. In Jesus you discover a fountain to wash away the guilt of all your sin.

Course member William wrote, "I subscribe to several newsletters about the PC industry. In one of them, mention was made of the fact that deleted files could be recovered, if one knew how, and had the right software. I already knew how, and I already had the software. I had just not even thought it.
That night, in my sleep, it seems like just about every pic I used to have on a particular erased Zip disk, was played back into my brain. The temptation continued all throughout the next day. I knew I could recover those files. The following day, upon arriving home,
I took that Zip disk, two others like it, and every floppy disk that I could identify as having ever contained such material, smashed each of them and, although I'm not normally one to do such as this, threw them into a lake."

Course member Marc wrote, "The Lord has truly blessed me in bringing me to your ministry. Not only have I been able to conquer the temptations so far, but even the strongholds are weakening.
It has been 25 days now and, with the help of Jesus, I will never fall back. Of course, as you know, this is probably a time when Satan is preparing to counter-attack,
but I'm prepared for it, because I've finally given my problem with porn and lust over to Christ for the first time in my Christian walk and I'm letting Him fight the war for me."

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.
It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth. This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
