They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom.
But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!"
Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us."
So Moses prayed for the people. The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."
So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.Numbers 21:4-10
Truth to memorize: The cure for sin is to focus on Jesus Christ!
Let's begin today's lesson by reviewing the passage above and answering the following questions:
Question 1
问题1
The people were complaining against God. What did He do to them to make them stop?
Question 2
When the people died from snakebite, how did God tell Moses to fix the problem?
Question 3
What were the people to do with the bronze snake on the pole?
Question 4
Please write out the "Truth to memorize" from above:
Question 5
What happened as the people looked at the snake on the pole?
This is all a bit confusing, isn't it? People get bit by snakes, Moses puts up a pole with a snake on it, people look at the snake and they're cured. What does that have to do with me, pornography, and sexual impurity?
Let's examine this story a little closer. Think of it this way:
The serpent of sin has bitten us, Friend! It's a deadly bite; the venom of sin is running through our veins, and we will die from the fatal wound.
But God erected a cross-like pole, and on that pole He hung a Savior. If we look at the Savior, we will live. We'll be cganured from the snakebite of sin, and instead of perishing, we'll enjoy everlasting life!
Course member Jim wrote, "GOD sent snakes to the Israelites to make them stop complaining. Then He told Moses to put a bronze snake on a pole. All the people had to do was look on it.
In much the same way, 'The cure for sin is focusing on Jesus Christ.' When the people focused on the snake, they were cured.
I often forget that pornography is deadly, just like the snakebites. Isaiah also said to just look on Him, and you will be saved. Again in Hebrews, it says we are to look to Jesus."
But wait a minute! Is this the correct way to interpret and understand this story? How can a snake represent Jesus Christ?
That's a good question—the snake doesn't represent Christ, rather, it points forward to our sin, which was nailed to the cross with Christ. "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life" (John 3:14).
Note that people bitten by snakes were simply to look! Looking is what cured them. Jesus Christ was lifted up on a cross, where He died for our sins. LOOK! Do you see Him there?
He is wounded in His hands for the wrong we've done with our hands. His feet are pierced because of the wrong places our feet have taken us.
He is wearing a crown of thorns because of the wrong thoughts we've cherished; His heart is broken because of the wrong loves we've had. LOOK! He's our cure! Look, believe and live!
There are many "cures" offered by society today. But if we examine most of them, we see some consistent themes.
For instance, some tell us that the "cure" is to examine the snakebite—focus on your pain, your past and your parents.
Dear friends, these "cures" are not of much value in helping us overcome bondage to pornography and sexual sin.
The cure for the snake-bitten Israelites was simple, yet profound: LOOK! The cure for habitual pornography use, or impurity of any kind, is to focus our lives on Jesus Christ.
Question 6
Why do you think God chose a serpent to be uplifted on the pole? What did the serpent represent?
A snake is used in Scripture as a symbol of evil. Satan appeared as a serpent when he tempted Adam and Eve.
Next, consider 2 Corinthians 5:21: "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
"God made Him... to be sin for us." On the cross, Jesus Christ took our sins upon Himself.
This passage refers back to the Mosaic law (specifically Leviticus 4-5), where the priest laid his hands on the animal that was to be the sin offering, symbolically placing the sins of the people on the animal.
Jesus Christ bore our sins in His own body on the cross; when we look at him, our Sin-Bearer, we find that sexual sin loses its appeal, and we are cured.
Guilt and bondage to sin go hand in hand. In the physical world, when a criminal is declared guilty by the judge, incarceration soon follows.
But in the spiritual realm, if we look on the cross of Jesus Christ, we see the penalty for our sin being paid, and our guilt removed. Freedom from guilt and freedom from the power of sin go hand in hand.
Guilt and sin, which have "bitten us," were crucified with Christ! Look at the cross and be healed!
Question 7
Explain how the following three verses go with the teaching in this lesson:
Look to Me, all the ends of the earth, and be saved! Isaiah 45:22
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, who for the joy set before Him, endured the cross...Hebrews 12:2
For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.2 Chronicles 20:12
Friend, the last verse (2 Chronicles 20:12) contains everything we need to know to defeat the "vast army" of pornographic images that attack us. There are three specific truths listed in that verse. Note them with me:
They admitted their powerlessness. They said, "For we have no power."
They admitted their ignorance. They said, "We do not know what to do." In order to truly defeat our enemy, we must admit that we are without resources to fight it. We have neither the power to fight nor the knowledge of how to win.
They focused on God. Having admitted their own lack of power and ability, knowledge and resources, they did not stop there. They looked to God for help, and focused on Him.
If you read the rest of this story in 2 Chronicles 20, you will see that God totally defeats the "vast army." Here is the key: "But our eyes are upon You." Focus!
My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare.Psalm 25:15
Notice the connection between focusing on the Lord and escaping from the trap!
4When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the penalty of their sin.
5 But if you will look to God and plead with the Almighty, 6...even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.Job 8:4-6
The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.Ezra 8:22-23
During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"Matthew 14:25-31
As long as he was looking at Jesus, Peter walked on water—but when he "saw the winds and the waves" he began to sink. How do you think this applies to our own struggles today?
We've listed out below what "looking at Jesus" means in each of the eight passages of Scripture above. Read through these and consider how they relate to your situation:
In Numbers 21, looking at the serpent meant that they were in need of a cure for their snakebite. In just this way, we look to Jesus Christ to eradicate sin from our lives.
In Isaiah 45:22, we are instructed to look to Jesus for salvation.
In Hebrews 12:2, we are called to focus on Christ as a preventative to weariness and discouragement. He gives us strength to finish the race.
In 2 Chronicles 20:12, we are instructed to look to Jesus to defeat the vast army of sin.
In Psalm 25:15, we are instructed to focus on Jesus in order to be released from the trap of sin.
In Job 8:4-6, we are instructed to look to Jesus for restoration.
In Ezra 8:22-23, we are invited to look to Jesus to receive grace.
In Matthew 14:25-31, we are shown that looking to Jesus enables us to live supernaturally, walking on the water of our sin.
In summary, all of these passages tell us to look to Jesus. If we do so, he'll save us, eradicate sin in our lives, and enable us to be victorious. Do you see why focusing on Christ is so important?
Question 8
问题8
What would it look like, practically, to have your life "focused" on Jesus Christ? Be specific. What will you do differently because of this teaching?
Course member Pastor Joe wrote, "Focusing on Jesus Christ means to put Him first. To look at, study, and concentrate so strongly that you see the details and characteristics of Christ and NOT to focus on something else (like porn and such).
More practically, we can focus on Him by praise & worship, prayer and Bible study. Focus on Jesus, also, by asking Him to be Lord of our lives (EVERY area) and following Him, by being like Him in character, morality and deed."

Scripture to consider today:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.Colossians 3:1 ESV
To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.
It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
