SWelcome back, Friend!
In His Word, God tells us how to defeat the devil and overcome sin. Today we'll study God's strategy and learn how to eradicate sexual sin from our lives.
Throughout Scripture, a particular theme crops up whenever sin is mentioned: We are to deal harshly with it, to be merciless in eradicating it, to annihilate every speck of it from our lives—and to ask God for the grace to accomplish this.
Read the following Scripture and note the very practical guidance it provides for ridding our lives of sexual impurity:
I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.Psalm 18:37-38
What stands out about the psalm writer's attitude? Note that he took the offensive—he aggressively pursued and overtook his enemies.
This was violent war; he crushed his enemies so they could not rise again.
How can we apply these principles to our struggle against pornography and sexual impurity?
Strategy #1: We must take the offensive in our fight. Many of us walk around in a defensive state of mind, hoping against hope that we'll be able to dodge the next incoming fiery dart of the devil.
For years I lived in fear that I would succumb to temptation; I lived in defeat week after week, year after year.
But now I see that my battle plan was all wrong and—instead of crouching defensively from temptation, I must pursue the enemy and annihilate it.
I've already mentioned some of the steps I took to do this—removing the TV from my hotel room, showing hotel receipts to my wife, putting a filter on my computer, getting rid of the TV in our home.
I refused to go anywhere near the magazine rack at the grocery store or airport terminal. I got involved in ministry to other people who want out of pornography.
This was my way of "getting even" with the enemy for the devastation he wrought in my life. What does your aggressive battle plan look like?
Some people say that the above suggestions are too "radical," and that it is not a "normal" life. My response is, "So? That’s OK.
God is enabling me to be free from the trap of the devil in immorality, and it does not bother me to be thought a little strange. Walking in purity, enjoying fellowship with Christ, and having an effective ministry are more important."
Question 1
问题1
In what ways are you taking the offensive in your battle against the deception of pornography and sexual sin? Could you do more?
Have fun thinking of new offensive moves against the enemy. My wife and I like to be creative as we plot our next offensive move against the devil.
Strategy #2: We must pursue the enemy with a healthy dose of spiritual aggression.
I drag every little temptation into the "light." This means that if I am tempted in some way, I tell my wife immediately or email a friend to expose it.
Sexual sin is like a fungus; it grows best in the dark. Learn to aggressively drag each temptation into the light to sap it of its strength.
Get used to emailing a friend (or one of us at The Way of Purity course) to say "I am tempted to view pornography on the Internet just now—can you help?"
One of the great joys for us is when people write in to ask for help and prayer in order to prevent a fall. This is exposing the temptation to the light.
I often run to the Word of God for help. "You, oh Lord, are a strong tower, a sure defense against my foe."
I seek to destroy the enemy when he first peeks his head around the corner. BAM! I immediately hit him hard.
As soon as I sense an uprising temptation, I open my Bible, begin singing a hymn, or contact my wife or a friend. Be aggressive in the initial stages of temptation.
Strategy #3: We must be spiritually violent with our "pet" sins.
From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.Matthew 11:12
43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.
45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell..." Mark 9:43, 45,47
Treat pornography as if it were your worst enemy trying to drag your soul into hell, and "hack," "chop," and "pluck out" your way to freedom from it.
Look for ways to expose the deeds done in darkness. Crush pornography and grind it to powder, or it will rise again and you will be defeated in a weak moment.
Strategy #4: Pray for God’s grace to accomplish this aggressive battle plan against the enemy.
We make our plans, but the Lord directs our steps (Proverbs 16:9), so we must seek Him for grace to carry them out.
Notice David's understanding of grace in Psalm 18:
You armed me with strength for battle; you made my adversaries bow at my feet. You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes.Psalm 18:39-40
Jesus said, "...apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5), so we must be dependant on, and united with Him.
Friend, in order to overcome sexual impurity in our lives, we must have a grace-empowered battle plan.
One man I know plans his victory strategy for the entire next day before he goes to bed at night, and then prays to accomplish his plan.
He knows that things don't always go according to schedule, so He also asks God for grace to deal with the unexpected. He is wise, and enjoys lasting victory.
Let's summarize the battle plan so far: stop treating your enemy as your friend, take the offensive in the war, and aggressively destroy all sexual sin in your life. It can be done, by the grace of God!
Please read through the following Scriptures and provide your comments. How do they relate to the principle of offensive, aggressive violence in this battle? We have given you a "starter thought" before each passage:

Deuteronomy 7:1-6 — Be merciless against all sin
When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations - the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you - and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally.
Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD's anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.
This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire. For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.
The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.Deuteronomy 7:1-6

Exodus 32:19, 20 — No matter what it may be worth, destroy it
When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.Exodus 32:19-20

Course member Jeff wrote, "These verses are awesome. Moses just went wild. That moment is what we are working toward here - an indignant fire against that which causes sin.
By this time, Moses had just had enough and made them drink the water, which must have been bitter to the Israelites. It must have been disgusting, and there is Moses forcing it down their throats.
I can imagine chards of it lodging in their mouths and throats, making them cry out in pain. Then, once in their stomachs, it would have made the ill, causing great pain. What a day that was. They swallowed their vulgarity."
Deuteronomy 7:17, 21-22 — the Lord will drive them out little by little
You may say to yourselves, "These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?" Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.
The LORD your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you".Deuteronomy 7:17, 21-22

Ephesians 5:11-13 - Expose them
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
"Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you."Ephesians 5:11-13

Jeff wrote, "Yes. We cannot live dark lives and also live in the light; it is impossible! It is physically impossible, and it is spiritually impossible!
Part of my battle plan has been to keep the lights on. To some it sounds odd, but every time I fell to pornography and self-gratification, it was in the dark.
I'd close all the shades and turn off the lights. How evil. It is like preparing a temple for worship. My physical temple and my spiritual temple were dark, with no light.
Now that I have the lights on all the time, it is a physical reminder of the spiritual reality. The light is such a simple thing, but it does extreme violence to the darkness. There is no place for the darkness to hide."

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.
It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
