Dear friend, the dark night of the soul is temporary! The intense struggle against sin does not last forever! If we are in Christ, we will be victorious! Let us observe this truth in Romans 8:
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1
Friend, how wonderful to know that this shining sentence, declaring "no condemnation," follows Romans 7, where the intense war with sin is pictured. What do those who battle sin, and lose often, dread the most? Condemnation! And here Paul declares that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.
Question 1
Do you sense the joy in the placement of this verse?
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2
Talk about "setting captives free"! Paul is a released captive, set free from the law of sin and death. Not only is he not condemned, but he is also not enslaved.
The Holy Spirit came to Paul, set him free from habitual sin, and enabled him to triumph over it. With God, life always triumphs over death! In the Bible, whenever Jesus attended a funeral, he raised the dead to life.
Question 2
问题2
Where are you right now? Are you under "the law of sin and death," or are you a freed captive, enjoying life and victory?
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man. Romans 8:3
This is an important concept: the law was powerless. It could command me to cease viewing pornography, but could not enable me to do so.
It was powerless to change my heart, give me new desires, or release me from the trap of the devil. But what the law could not do, God did! And how did He do it?
Question 3
God did what the law could not do—free us from sin's power. How did God do this?
Friend, the death of Jesus Christ has everything to do with our freedom from sexual sin!
Jesus took our sin upon Himself; therefore, we are neither condemned nor enslaved! He breaks the power of canceled sin! He sets the captive free.
in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:4
Again, we see that Jesus’ death has done something magnificent. It not only frees us from sin's penalty and sin's power, but it also fulfills the law in us.
You see, the law said, "Do this or die." The law, requiring death for sin, was fulfilled when Jesus died. He died in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us! And now, we who are in Christ are counted as law-keepers.
Question 4
Verse 4 above describes those in Christ as living a certain way. What way is it?
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
7the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.
8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8
Question 5
Please list out everything the above passages states about those who live according to the flesh. I'll write the first one:
1. They have their minds set on what the flesh desires
Question 6
What do verses 5-8 say about those who live according to the Spirit?
You, however, are controlled not by the flesh but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. Romans 8:9
This verse makes it clear that if God's spirit is living in us, He will control us. While I was viewing pornography and involved in sexual sin, my flesh controlled me. That is what characterized me. But now, God's Spirit lives in me and controls me.
Question 7
问题7
Overall, would you say you are controlled by the Spirit of God, or by your flesh?
10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. Romans 8:10-11
According to verse 10, Christians are characterized by "dead flesh." Their bodies are dead because of sin. In other words, they are not characterized by sinning, but by being controlled by the Spirit of God.
It's interesting that Paul juxtaposes our "dead flesh" with our assurance of eternal life. Our bodies are dead because of sin, but will live forever through the Spirit of Christ who lives in us.
Those who know that their flesh is crucified also know that they will live forever with Christ.
12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation - but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.
13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,
14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Romans 8:12-14
This chapter started out with "no condemnation" (verse 1) and ends with "no separation" (verses 35-39).
But here in the middle, it says that we have "no obligation" to live according to the flesh. When our flesh cries out to be satisfied, we have no obligation to gratify it.
Question 8
According to verse 13 above, what will happen if we live to gratify our flesh?
Question 9
What are we to do with the misdeeds of the body?
Paul started this discourse by describing his freedom from sin, and here he instructs us to put to death the misdeeds of the body. Freedom from habitual sin requires crucifying our flesh.
Paul said "I die daily"—he put his flesh to death each day. Our flesh is to be crucified, not gratified.
Question 10
Is God giving you grace to crucify your flesh, or are you gratifying it?
There's no denying it, Friend: crucifying our flesh is a painful process. Denying ourselves self-gratification when we are burning with desire is extremely uncomfortable, even painful. Read how one student describes this pain:
Please know that the gain is worth the pain. Our bodies adjust, our habits change, and soon we are no longer even thinking of self-gratification.
Don't believe the false notion that we must gratify the flesh in order to relieve tension—God didn't design our bodies to require us to sin in order to stay healthy.
Question 11
问题11
Please summarize today's teaching.
Question 12
问题12
What is going on in your life right now?
Thoughts to consider today:
But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.
This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. Colossians 1:22-23
And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior's blood
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
He left His Father's throne above,
so free, so infinite His grace!
Emptied Himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam's helpless race.
No condemnation now I dread;
如今我不再惧怕被定罪;
I am my Lord's and He is mine:
Alive in Him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine.
Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
19 But I will bring the people of Israel back to their own pasture. They will eat on Mount Carmel and in Bashan. They will eat and be full on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.
20 The LORD says, "At that time people will try to find Israel's guilt, but there will be no guilt. People will try to find Judah's sins, but no sins will be found, because I will leave a few people alive from Israel and Judah, and I will forgive their sins. Jeremiah 50:19-20
We must rest ourselves upon his power; we must be confident of this, that Christ can make us clean.
No guilt is so great but that there is a sufficiency in his righteousness to atone for it; no corruption so strong, but there is a sufficiency in his grace to subdue it.
To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.
It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.
This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
